This article attempts to explain the major issues of economic development in the Philippines and explores how the Aquino regime can remedy these problems with a six-year mid-term development plan. Economic growth and employment The Philippines’s economic growth rate (GDP growth rate) increased from 5.1% in the 1960s to 6.3% in the 1970s and plunged to 0.4% in the 1980s. Per capita GDP increased from 1038 pesos in 1955 to 1235 pesos in 1965; it increased to 1618 pesos, 1919 pesos and 1949 pesos in 1975, 1980 and 1982, respectively, to 1,655 pesos in 1985.
