The nineteenth-century German chemist, Liebig, has done astonishingly large amount of experimental research in the field of organic chemistry, and the analysis of organic compounds is quite accurate. One day in 1823, he separated a dark brown liquid from the salt mother liquor. This liquid, which was very similar to the color, state and properties of the iodine chloride known at the time, did not go deep into it, he found it to be iodine iodide and had it labeled on the reagent bottle. Three years later, a young French college student, Balad, found that the bottom of the mother liquor was always a dark brown liquid and had a pungent smell after getting a purple solid - iodine.
