美国南北战争以后到一战之前(1865年—1914年),也是美国社会转型期。在此期间,美国完成了从农业化向工业化、城市化的转型,实现了从自由资本主义向垄断资本主义的过渡,崛起成为世界经济霸主,同时也经历了美国历史上最腐败的时期,著名作家马克·吐温把这一时期讽刺为“镀金时代”。“镀金时代”美国的腐败渗透到社会各界和各个层级。政党、政府、国会、法院乃至军队无一幸免,联邦政府、州政府和市政府都存在腐败交易。在1905年一份由法国人绘制的美国政治地图中,45个州中的25个州完全腐败,13个州部分腐败,只有6个州没有发现腐败。
After the American Civil War and before World War I (1865-1914), it was also a period of social transformation in the United States. During this period, the United States completed the transition from agrarianization to industrialization and urbanization, realized the transition from free capitalism to monopoly capitalism, and emerged as the overlord of the world economy. It also experienced the most corrupt period in the history of the United States. Writer Mark Twain satirized this period as “gilded age.” “Gilded Age ” The corruption in the United States infiltrates into all walks of life and all levels of society. Political parties, the government, the parliament, the courts and even the military are immune to corruption. There are corrupt deals in the federal, state, and municipal governments. In a 1905 map of the United States drawn by the French, 25 out of 45 states were completely corrupt, 13 were partly corrupt and only 6 found no corruption.
