玉树,是青海省西南部一个以藏族为主体的自治州。“玉树”系藏语音译,意为遗址。相传玉树族的第一代头人恳布那钦建立部落的地区是格萨尔王妃朱毛的诞生地,故部落名为玉树。又因其牧地地处青海与西藏间的要津,玉树便成为官方习称此地的地名,并相沿至今。玉树藏族民间舞蹈主要分布在东部地区的玉树县、称多县、囊谦县,简称“东三县”。
