Since the 1960s, the phenomenon of gender discrimination in English has become a hot issue for linguists and scholars interested in linguistics. Until now, this topic still attracted many scholars to make efforts for the development of this research . Based on the research results and linguistic theories predecessors have already made, this paper tries to probe into the causes of gender discrimination and finds that there are two main factors: cultural imprint and social reality. From this conclusion, the article concludes that language is essentially a reflection of society. If social inequalities exist, it is only a matter of time before real equality is achieved in linguistics. Therefore, the elimination of gender-based discrimination in languages lies in the social changes and the improvement of women’s social status.
