The establishment and maintenance of cultural systems and institutions to ensure an adequate standard of living for people while maintaining forest ecosystems and their biological diversity are a huge challenge people face in the present and forthcoming century. This article describes the efforts of a community in the northwestern part of Ecuador to use research and environmental education to influence forest conservation. In this region, the sustainability of lowland agriculture depends in part on the catching effect of hilly forests. The community at Loma Alta understands and rates this catching fog and uses their own management and decision-making system to protect the forest. This research, conducted under a theoretical framework of general interest to sociologists and naturalists concerned with the conservation of tropical forests, gives great attention to the results of integrated conservation and development.
